From Wayne Madsen (political chatter after dark)
According to Congressional sources, the May 26 "gunfire" incident in the House Rayburn Office Building underground parking garage took place because a door to an adjacent firing range was deliberately left open. The House of Representatives buildings were locked down by Capitol Hill police as a result. The incident took place as many members had or were in the process of departing for the Memorial Day weekend. Congressional sources claim the firing range door was left open to create the "security incident" and get the media's attention off of the feud that had developed between House Speaker Dennis Hastert and the White House over the FBI raid of Rep. William Jefferson's office. Hastert decried the raid and a Justice Department source then revealed that Hastert was under investigation as part of the bribery probe of Congress. The plan worked. The media focused on the gunfire shot story and the Hastert-White House feud was overtaken by the Memorial Day weekend.
