BEIRUT, Lebanon (AP) — Beirut is being shaken by the first Israeli strikes on the city in nearly two days.
At least four heavy blasts pounded the city that was relatively calm for yesterday's visit by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
The quick round of explosions was strong enough to set off car alarms in central Beirut, miles away from where the Israeli army has been pounding a Hezbollah stronghold in the southern part of the city.
The attacks on Beirut followed airstrikes on a market city in southern Lebanon that killed six people. At the same time, dozens of Hezbollah rockets falling on northern Israel killed a teenage girl and wounded several others.
Israel's prime minister has told some new immigrants from France that Israel has the stamina for “a long struggle” to defeat Hezbollah.
