Were You There?
I’ve been to many places
I’ve seen a lot of things
I’ve had my share of sorrows
That living always brings
I’ve had a lot of memories
Etched into my mind
I’ve looked for many answers
That I never seemed to find
I’ve witnessed many sorrows
On my journey through this life
I’ve seen the poor and desperate
Whose days are filled with strife
I’ve been witness to the conflicts
That have grown into a war
I’ve watched as people suffered
Till our Nation cried “no more!”
I remember very well the day
My best friend waved good bye
As he headed off to Vietnam
Never thinking he would die
I recall the day they unveiled The Wall
To honor those fallen men
But I could not help but wonder
What all of them could have been
I could only hope that our Nation learned
From their precious sacrifice
That war is not the answer
And is never worth the price
But now that lesson seems forgotten
As we are embroiled once again
In a conflict without reason
Where we pay the price with men
But lately I’ve been wondering
What the future holds in store
As our leaders blindly take us
Down the well-worn path of war
As I look back upon the centuries
To wars caused when leaders lied
And a haunting question comes to mind:
“Were you there when America died?”
Did you watch the Towers fall
Did you see the people die
Did you hear the President lie to us
As he looked us in the eye
Were you so filled with hunger
To avenge these terrible acts
That you overlooked the obvious
And accepted the so-called facts
Did you watch our sons and daughters
Depart for that foreign land
Did you begin to wonder
If the reason lay beneath the sand
Did you watch the nightly news
As they announced the body count
Did your faith begin to waver
As the numbers began to mount
Were you proud of our men in uniform
And the terrible price they paid
Did you feel the sting of shame
When you learned about Abu Ghraib
Did you watch the foreign press
Report the news unvarnished
Did it hurt when you realized
That America’s image had been tarnished
Did the truth begin to dawn on you
That perhaps this war was planned
That this was just a sinister plot
To grab their oil-rich land
Did a feeling of disgust
Begin to seep into your being
As the blinders were removed
You couldn’t believe what you were seeing
Did you finally begin to realize
That this war was just a sham
And that our nation was being led
Into another Vietnam
If these questions have upset you
And disturbed you through the night
Then perhaps it’s time to take a stand
And help to make it right
So let our voices ring
And be heard from shore to shore
Let our nation’s leaders know
We won’t tolerate this war
Seek the truth about 9-11
Uncover everyone who lied
Expose their evil conspiracy
Make them pay for those who died
Search for truth about what happened
Draw from every source you can
Don’t let anyone convince you
This was not an evil plan
It will take a grass roots movement
And we can’t afford to fail
So resolve yourself to speaking out
Till we see them all in jail
Don’t worry about retribution
The risk is worth your sacrifice
If we don’t pull together
America pays the price
I look forward to the day
When we all stand hand in hand
And begin to right the wrongs
That have enslaved this mighty land
We must impeach the evil Neo-Cons
Who led us down the wrong track
And abide by our constitution
Let’s take America back!
One day soon we can all look back
And be proud we took a stand
So that Government of and by the people
Did not vanish from this land.
God Bless America !
