Federal Magistrate Judge Liam O'Grady has ordered The New York Times to reveal the identities of sources used by columnist Nicholas Kristof, RAW STORY has learned.
The order comes in response to a lawsuit brought against the paper by Dr. Steven Hatfill, who was identified by the publication as a "person of interest" in the investigation into the mailing of anthrax to public figures in 2001.
Though FBI raids on his home were attended by journalists and speculation spread through the media that Hatfill was a primary suspect, he was never charged with any crime relating to the matter.
The court ruled that that under Virginia law, reporters' privilege to keep sources confidential may be outweighed by other factors.
The Times has indicated that it plans to appeal the ruling.
