They meant: "Today kids, we are learning about the USA. This is the Pledge of Alliegance of the USA. Aren't Americans kooky with they're ultranationalistic zeal?"
Ok I made the last bit up, but the rest is true.

It meant, I'm an American, America's great, all hail America. You stick up for America, you attack anyone who doesn't like America, and you hide America's downfalls (which there aren't any but just in case). That was as a kid, of course.

it meant i had to stand up for the couple of minutes it took to say it and "when your ears hang low" song.
