WARSAW (Reuters) - Poland was the heart of the CIA's secret detention network in Europe, with bases there until recently holding a quarter of the 100 detainees estimated held in such camps worldwide, a human rights group said.

Reports of the CIA operating secret jails in Poland and Romania as part of its war on terror have raised controversy on both sides of the Atlantic and dogged U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's European trip this week.

"Poland was the main base for CIA interrogations in Europe, while Romania played more of a role in the transfer of detained prisoners," Marc Garlasco, a leading analyst at Human Rights Watch, was quoted by Polish daily Gazeta Wyborcza on Friday as saying.

Garlasco said the CIA had set up two detention centers in Poland, which were closed shortly after the Washington Post published an article about secret prisons last month.

He said the allegations were based on information from CIA sources and other documents obtained by Human Rights Watch. "We have leads, circumstantial evidence to check but it's too early to reveal them," Garlasco said.

Polish authorities have repeatedly denied the existence of secret jails of any form on Polish territory, with Prime Minister Kazimierz Marcinkieicz saying this week he would fully cooperate in human rights probes into the allegations.

Poland is one of Washington's leading allies in Europe, where it irked EU heavyweights Germany and France by backing the U.S. war with Iraq and sending troops there.

European countries responded to public pressure by seeking answers from Washington before Rice's trip, but quickly retreated in the face of her defense that the United States respected their sovereignty and acted within the law in its war on terrorism.

things are really poppin over here in germany....the latest news reports are not only that certain members of government, earlier secretarys of state schilly; of foreign affairs fischer; and the new secretary of foreign affairs steinmeier, at the time assistent to chancellor schröder, were aware of the kidnapping of el masri....now it is going in the direction that the german intelligence agency bnd supplied the cia with the information, or possibly were involved themselves in the kidnapping !!!

all hell is breaking loose over here, and it looks like a lot of people's illusion's are crumbling in front of their eyes. it is all moving toward's heads rolling !!!

at least these things are being addressed here, and are coming into the open. let's hope it swaps over into the states, and causes a few waves for us 911 truthers.

i'm not posting any links, because they are all german, if anyone wants them, let me know....

The report, if true, would be a huge embarrassment not only for the German authorities, but particularly for the German foreign minister, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who was intelligence coordinator for the former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder.

The report added to pressure on the government to reveal what its own officials may have known about the case of Khaled el-Masri, a German citizen who is suing the CIA for wrongful imprisonment after being held in an Afghan prison for five months last year.

An official is quoted in the report in the Berliner Zeitung newspaper said German authorities passed on information about Masri because he knew Reda Seyam, a German-based Islamist radical who was of interest to the Americans and is under investigation in Germany as an alleged supporter of a terrorist organisation.

Masri, who was initially detained in Macedonia and then flown to Afghanistan, has also testified that towards the end of his captivity he was questioned in prison by a native German speaker, whom he knew only as "Sam."

Interesting... it's very interesting to hear someone else's perspective on the other side of the "pond".

as i said, there is more breaking loose over here, than in the last three years together....wow...

yesterday evening alone, there were two seperate tv debate shows, (sorry, not sure if thats what you call them), with a number of politicians from different partys, and so on...just on this topic...it's making big waves, and it could cost a couple of people's heads. of course the new conservative part of the "big coalition" government is trying to throw all the shit at schroeders past legislation period, which is hitting steinmeier, who was schroeders "rove", and who is the new foreign minister in this coalition. it looks like it is going to hit fischer also, the ex foreign minister.

crazy....and i am going to be back in the states, where things start happeining here at home....

If your media continues to cover it, then yes... the people will do something about it.
