FAYETTEVILLE, N.C., Dec. 11 (UPI) -- U.S President George Bush is reportedly "very troubled" that some 1,200 soldiers are writing "news" for Iraq that the White House ordered in September 2001.

"We call our stuff information, and the enemy's propaganda," Col. Jack Summe, former commander of the Fourth Psychological Operations Group, told the New York Times.

Recent disclosures that a Pentagon contractor in Iraq paid newspapers to print "good news" articles written by U.S. soldiers prompted an outcry, with members of Congress saying the practice undermined U.S. credibility.

Bush's national security adviser Stephen Hadley said Bush was "very troubled" about the matter, although the campaign was begun by the White House, which set up a secret panel soon after the Sept. 11 attacks.

The military psychological operations unit based at Fort Bragg, N.C., turns out what its officers call "truthful messages" to support the United States government's objectives in Iraq and Afghanistan, although its commander acknowledged that the stories are one-sided and their U.S. sponsorship is hidden.
