The United States urged Saudi Arabia on Monday to help ease Muslim tensions over published cartoons of Islam's Prophet Muhammad, but it also criticized cartoons and articles in the Arab world that attack Christians and Jews.
While European and Muslim politicians called for calm, the administration said Saudi Arabia should use its influence to try quenching rage over Danish caricatures that have sparked demonstrations and some violence in Muslim communities around the world.
White House spokesman Scott McClellan said opponents of the cartoons should "forcefully speak out against all forms of hateful speech, including cartoons and articles that frequently have appeared in the Arab world espousing anti-Semitic and anti-Christian views."
