British officials say the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council have agreed to a statement demanding that Iran stop enriching uranium.
Officials hope to have the statement approved by the full Security Council later Wednesday.
The statement comes on the eve of a meeting in Berlin between top diplomats of Germany, Britain, the United States, Russia, China and France. China and Russia had voiced concerns that too strong a statement on Iran could be counterproductive and fail to bring Iran back in line with its non-proliferation obligations.
The United States accuses Iran of using its uranium enrichment program to develop an atomic bomb. Iran insists its nuclear intentions are peaceful.
