Eight dead in US school shooting

Six people have been killed and about 14 injured when a gunman opened fire at a school in the northern US state of Minnesota, officials say.

The gunman - a local student - was believed to be among the dead in the mid-afternoon shooting at Red Lake High School, FBI spokesman Paul McCabe said.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident at the school on the Red Lake Indian Reservation.

The gunmen earlier shot dead a man and a woman at their house, Mr McCabe said.

Among the dead were two male students - including the gunman - two female students, a teacher and a security guard, he said.

He said all of the dead students were in one room, without giving any further details.

A local fire chief was quoted as saying that a student had walked into the school while classes were going on.

He said the student was carrying several weapons, including a shotgun and a pistol, and then opened fire.

The school - close to the Canadian border - has about 300 students.

Eyewitnesses are quoted as saying that the whole reservation has been locked down by police who have set up road blocks.

Mr McCabe declined to talk about a possible connection between the gunmen and the man and the woman shot dead earlier at their house.

The reservation is home to Indians of the Chippewa tribe.

The attack is one of the deadliest school shootings in America.

In April 1999, two teenage gunmen killed 13 people and themselves at Columbine high school in Colorado.
